What it is

What a local map rank tracker shows you

Google Maps and the local pack rank businesses by distance, relevance and prominence. A plumber can be first on its own street and missing two kilometres away. A single rank check cannot show that, so a map scan checks from 25 places at once.

The grid is centred on the business. Green points are where it ranks in the top 3, and red points are where it is not in the top 20. In one look you see how far the business’s local visibility reaches and where it fades.

What every map scan gives you

  • A 5 × 5 grid of positions around the business
  • The rank at each point, colour coded from top 3 to 20+
  • Average rank across the 25 points
  • How many points rank in the top 3
  • How many points rank in the top 20
  • A short tip on what to do next
  • Scan history for every client and keyword
How it works

Run a local map scan in 4 steps

  1. Set the business location

Connect the client’s Google Business Profile, or add the latitude and longitude of the business address in the client settings.

  2. Enter the keyword

Open Keyword tracking, go to Map scans, pick the client and type a keyword such as “plumber near me”.

  3. Pick the location and run

Choose the main address or the second location and click Run scan. The 25 points are checked at once.

  4. Read the grid

See the rank at every point, the average rank, the top 3 and top 20 counts, and compare with earlier scans in the history.

Features

Map rank tracker features

Built for agencies that manage local businesses, inside the same workspace as your audits, rankings and client reports.

25-point grid around the business

Each scan checks one keyword at 25 points on a 5 × 5 grid, about 1.5 km (1 mile) apart, centred on the business location.

Positions in Google Maps

At every point the scan reads the top 20 Google Maps results and finds the business. Anything lower shows as 20+.

Three numbers that sum it up

Average rank, points in the top 3 and points in the top 20, so you can compare keywords and track progress after local SEO work.

Business Profile or your own coordinates

Use the location of the client’s connected Google Business Profile, or enter the map position of the address yourself.

A second location per client

Scan a branch or a second office as well as the main address. Pick it in the Location field before you run the scan.

Scan history

Every scan is saved with its date, client, keyword and results. Open any past scan to see its grid again.

What the colours on the map mean

The centre point is the business location. Look at how the colours change toward the edges of the grid: that is how far the business’s visibility in Google Maps reaches for the keyword.

When rankings drop quickly away from the address, more reviews, local citations and pages for nearby areas help widen the green zone. Run the same keyword again later to see the change.

Local map rank tracker FAQs

What is a local map rank tracker?

A local map rank tracker shows where a business appears in Google Maps results for a keyword, from many points around its location instead of one. Local results change from street to street, so one check from one place does not show the whole picture. A map scan shows it as a grid you can read at a glance.

How does the 5 × 5 map scan work?

The scan checks Google Maps for one keyword at 25 points on a 5 × 5 grid centred on the business, about 1.5 km (1 mile) apart. At each point it looks for the business in the top 20 results and shows its position, or 20+ if it is not there. You get the average rank, the number of points in the top 3 and the number of points in the top 20.

What do I need before I run a map scan?

The scan needs the position of the business on the map. Connect the client’s Google Business Profile and the scan uses that location, or add the latitude and longitude of the business address in the client’s settings. See Run a map scan.

Can I scan more than one location for a client?

Yes. Each client has a main business address and an optional second location. Add the second location on the client’s Settings tab, then pick it in the Location field before you run the scan.

How many map scans can I run?

Every current plan includes a number of map scans each month, and the 14-day free trial lets you try one. Each scan uses one from your allowance, and the count resets on your billing date. See the pricing page for the limits on each plan.

How is a map scan different from keyword rank tracking?

Keyword rank tracking follows many keywords in Google search on a schedule, by country or city and by device. A map scan checks one keyword in Google Maps at 25 points around the business at once, so you can see how far the business’s local visibility reaches.

Are map scans included in client reports?

Map scan grids and their history stay in the client’s workspace in the app. Client reports cover local results with Google Business Profile data (views on Search and Maps, calls, directions, website clicks and rating) and your tracked keyword rankings.
