Step-by-step help: run an SEO audit

What is GEO?

What is a GEO audit?

GEO, generative engine optimisation, is making content easy for AI assistants to find, understand, trust and quote. AI search quotes short, direct answers from pages it can read and believe, and skips pages it can’t.

The GEO audit checks one page for exactly that: structured data, clear answers, trust signals and whether AI crawlers are allowed in. To see whether a brand actually appears in AI answers, use the AI visibility tracker.

The 4 sections of the GEO audit

  • Structured data: Organization, FAQPage, Article with author, breadcrumbs, and Product or HowTo when the page needs them
  • Answers: a clear answer near the top, question-style headings, an FAQ section, lists and tables
  • Trust: author and bio, contact and about pages, a recent date, sources and reviews
  • AI crawlers: robots.txt rules for 6 AI bots, llms.txt, and content that loads without JavaScript
Features

GEO and Local SEO audit features

Each check says what was found on the page, why it matters and how to fix it.

AI crawler access

The audit reads robots.txt and tests the page for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and CCBot, and flags a block of any key bot as Critical.

Content without JavaScript

Many AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript. The audit compares the words in the raw HTML with the page rendered in Chrome and flags pages that need JavaScript to show their text.

Answers AI can quote

Checks for a 20 to 120 word answer near the top that doesn’t open with a greeting, question-style headings, an FAQ section, and lists or tables.

Name, address and phone (NAP) table

The Local SEO audit shows the business name, address, phone and opening hours found on the page next to the values in the schema or on the contact page.

Location pages and unique local text

Reads the audited page and up to 4 linked contact and location pages, counts location pages, checks the city in the title and H1, and flags location pages with copied text.

A fix for every check

Every failing check links to a fix guide with a basic fix, an expert fix with code, and steps for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and Webflow.

GEO and Local SEO audit FAQs

What is a GEO audit?

A GEO (generative engine optimisation) audit checks whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI features can read, understand, trust and quote a page. It checks structured data, clear answers, trust signals and whether AI crawlers are allowed in.

What is the difference between the GEO audit and AI visibility?

The GEO audit checks one page and tells you what to fix so AI assistants can use it. AI visibility asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity real questions and shows whether the client is actually named or cited in the answers.

Which AI crawlers does the GEO audit check?

GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and CCBot. The check fails as Critical when any of the four key bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended) is blocked in robots.txt.

Is llms.txt required?

No. llms.txt is a proposed convention and not all AI tools read it. It’s cheap to add, so the audit treats a missing file as a Warning, not Critical.

What does the Local SEO audit check?

The business name, address, phone and opening hours on the page and whether they match the schema and contact page, LocalBusiness schema, location pages, the city in the title and H1, the map, the link to the Google Business Profile, reviews, and mobile basics.

Which pages does the Local SEO audit compare?

It reads the audited page and up to 4 extra pages it finds linked from it, such as the contact page and location pages, and compares the phone and address on those pages and in the schema.

Do GEO and Local SEO audits use my audit allowance?

Yes, each one counts as a page audit. Failed audits don’t count. See plans and pricing for the limits.
